11 Preventative Measures for Babies and Toddlers

"A babe in the house is a well-spring of pleasure, a messenger of peace and love, a resting place for innocence on earth, a link between angels and men" ~Martin Fraquhar Tupper.

Taking care of Babies and Toddlers is very essential as they are very much prone to accidents and diseases. Making your home safe and cozy is the first step you can take to ensure this precious and timeless gift of God.

Here are a series of preventive measures to keep in mind when you have Babies in your home.

  • Arrange a good bed for your baby. This is to be done when the baby learns to turn around. The cradle can then be dangerous. A strong cot with high sides is good idea ensure safety of the babies.

  • Make sure that the table where the baby's nappy is changed has a cushion with high sides; this prevents the baby from rolling off.

  • Avoid giving toys those are small and unsafe. The baby may put it in its mouth and get choked while trying to swallow it. Also check if the toys you buy are not tagged. Toys unsafe for the children below three year are supposed to be tagged according to the government law.

  • A bouncy seat should be avoided as it is a strain on your baby's back and hips.

  • Check for the safety mechanism, strong joints and good breaks of the pram to ensure that it does not collapse suddenly.

Measures to be taken for Toddlers:

  • Kitchens are the most interesting place for the Toddlers. Store room for kettles filled with boiling water, electrical appliance having trailing cords, hot plates and dishes and many more. Try and keep these things out of reach of the Toddlers as they can get into trouble by pulling these things.

  • Keep all the chemicals and harmful liquids well locked in a cabinet. If swallowed can be harmful for the toddler.

  • Wrap up all the sharp corners that can poke into your child's eyes using plastic corners or rubber foams. This may look unattractive but will protect your baby.

  • Make sure that the book shelves are fixed properly to the wall. The toddler generally thinks them to be climbing stairs and in an attempt to climb them may result in the toppling down of the shelves on the child.

  • Make sure that the cloth of the table is mixed to the table with some clips or peg so that the child is unable to pull down the table cloth and everything on the table does not fall on the child.

  • Stairs can be yet another dangerous thing. Put gates in front of the stair so that the child does not fall down.
