The Little Lamb is on the Green
Every living creature needs to sleep. It is the main activity of the brain during early development thus really important for babies and toddlers. A sleep-wake cycle, regulated by dark and light, is important for babies and toddlers to maximize their development on all kind of fields. It takes some time before a baby develops a sleeping rhythm, and this causes the irregular sleeping schedules that all the babies have. The sleeping rhythms start to develop about 6 weeks after the baby's birth. Then it takes 3 to 6 months before the babies have developed a regular sleeping rhythm.
Babies and toddlers will spend more time sleeping then being awake. And it is very important they get the opportunity to do so because it has a great impact on the physical and mental development.
Babies tend to sleep a total of 10 to 18 hours a day on an irregular basis during the first months. Their sleeping rhythm interacts with their need to be changed, nurtured and fed. The babies sleep period varies between a one minute sleep and a heavier 3 hours sleep. Babies tend to be very active during their sleep. The babies appear restless as they swirl their legs, smile, and suck their fingers etc, while they sleep.
You will know when a baby wants to sleep by different signs. They might rub their eyes or cry and some babies develop their own signs. When you put a baby to bed when it's sleepy it's more likely to fall asleep and it will develop a way to go to sleep. When a baby is exposed to a lot of light and/or noises his will to sleep drops dramatically. When the evening falls they should be in a dimmer and quieter environment with less activity so they develop their sleeping pattern.
After 8 months babies usually sleep through the night. They don't have the need to be fed during the night and can sleep 9-12 hours. They still want to take a few 1-2 hour naps a day.
During a day toddler needs to have about 12-14 hours of sleep. When a toddler reaches around one and a half year of age his or her nap times will be reduced to once a day. The nap time will last about 1 to 3 hours and shouldn't occur close to the evening because it could delay their lust to sleep around their bedtime which is similar with adults. If you take a nap at 9 for 2 hours you most likely have a hard time to fall asleep again before 12.
Many things can lead to sleep problems. If a toddler is sending out signals that he or she is sleepy a lot during the day it is probably a reaction caused by a lack of sleep. A lack of sleep can also cause problems when it comes to the behavior of the toddler. If so it is important that the parents analyze the sleeping pattern of their baby or toddler and make sure it does get enough sleep.
All together it's important that a young child is able to get enough sleep for its development, physical and emotional. And if you're kid is a happy baby or toddler, you as parent will be at ease more and can take a lot of fun from your child. And if you're baby or toddler doesn't have sleeping problems, you will probably have more peaceful nights as well.
